Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan by John L. Stephens. Two volumes. Published in 1969 by Dover Publications, New York. First hardcover editions since Stephens's books were first published in 1841. The author made his journey in 1839-40, accompanied by an artist, Frederick Catherwood, who made detailed drawings of the Mayan ruins. The book was extremely popular upon publication; it remains an exciting 19th-century travel work and one of the early descriptions- and an incisive one- of the Mayan ruins. He almost single-handed discovered Mayan culture; explored ruined cities, monuments, temples; customs of Indians. Features115 excellent Catherwood drawings. Handsome red boards w/ black lettering. Books contain 424 (Vol 1) & 474 (vol 2) pages. Name stickers on endpapers. Otherwise both books in good condition. Tightly bound. Excellent gifts, keepsakes or research aids for those interested in Mayan history & culture.
