This was the first of the Bonington-led climbs to achieve a stunning success on a formidable Himalayan face. Dougal Haston and Don Whillans summited Annapurna's 10000 ft South Face on 27 May, 1970; nothing comparable had even been attempted previously. Fellow climber Ian Clough was killed on the descent in an avalanche near the bottom. One of the cornerstone titles of any Himalayan collection.
