42d Congress, 2d Session] Senate. [Ex. Doc. No. 19. Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting Reports from the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Navy relative to the cases of the Ship Hudson and the Schooner Washington. January17, 1872. Read, referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations, and ordered to be printed. 46 numbered pages. In very good condition with original thread and punch holes retains. some minor edge toning and folds and very minor edge tears. This is the story about the British seizing the whaling ship Hudson and the Hudson's schooner, the Washington for shooting pigs and cattle on the Falkland Islands that were deliberately populated by the Americans some years earlier to provide food for the whaling ships. Clearly the British were doing their usual, muscling in on a lucrative trade as the Falklands sat on the edge of the whaling grounds and foreign whalers, particularly the U.S. stopped at those abandoned islands to repair and get additional food etc. The British gun boat boarded the Hudson and Washington and forcibly had both ships escorted to the nearest British port and confiscated the ship in lieu of payment of fines. This set off an international fight between the Brits and the U.S. This pamphlet is the reporting of all the facts from the American side and the British response.
