The Indians of the Painted Desert Region by George Wharton James
Pub.1903 Little, brown and Company Boston
A Naturalist's Account of Interactions with Native Americans in the Southwest in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Culture and Circumstances of the Hopi, Navajo, Wallapai, and Havasupai Tribes. Dozens and dozens of unique and fascinating photographs.
Book is a tan cloth hardcover with a pictorial cover and gilt lettering on spine. Excellent condition, clean, tight, square, unmarked with the following exceptions: I think the book is signed by the author. There is an inscription, To Somebody from Somebody ( unreadable), Christmas, 1903. Also the author has signed the inside cover in his Navajo name: ' HunLKin Yankso, my Navajo scouts called me Hunel Kin Yank So ' Can anyone translate this ? It could mean ' Tall Near-sighted One ', ' Brave Snake Dancer ' , or it could be Navajo for ' Wasichu ' ( Lakota for ' Bad Luck, Guys, Here he comes again . ' or something to that effect ) . But seriously, It seems that the author had a genuine empathy and attachment to the Native Americans with whom he lived and worked. There are some more Indian words penciled on the last page and somebody has tipped in a clipping from the New York Herald Tribune, something about a Hopi Dance Festival.
A genuine artifact
