Hand-written and signed letter from Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice Horace Gray, Jr. to Hon. Lemuel Shaw, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, dated 1858.

 

Horace Gray (1828-1902) graduated from Harvard Law School, was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court, rose to the position of chief justice, and later was nominated to the United States Supreme Court by President Chester A. Arthur.  Gray is best remembered as the justice who changed his vote on the validity of the income tax. 

 

The letter is 3 attached pages, each measuring 7 ¾” x 9 ¾”.  In the letter, Gray refers to several court cases: Brown v. Bartlett; Commonwealth v. Hitchery; Appleton v. Hofhries?; Carter v. Carter; Essex Carberry? v. County Commissioner; Hale v. People’s Insurance Co.; ?? v. Hamilton Ins. Co.  Gray is asking Shaw for his opinions regarding these cases.

 

The letter is on blue paper which has lightened to white on a section of each page.  The letter has normal fold lines.
