Title page chipped and worn, with small tears and loss to blank margins repaired on verso, and two library stamps, margins of following two pages slightly frayed, scattered spotting and some marks to text.A folio volume, it measures approximately 33cm (12¾') x 23cm (9') x 6cm (2½'). Pagination pp. , 454, 465-579, , 500, , please note, lacks leaf B2 of text, i.e. pp 3/4.
The first and only English edition of Thomas de Fougasses' large and comprehensive history of Venice. The work commences 'with the fundrie opinions of the Cities foundation. In what place and by whome it was first built in the Marshes', and continues in great detail though to the year 1607. Originally published in 1608 as Histoire Generale de Venise, it was soon after translated into English by W. Shute and published in 1612. A beautifully printed book, with elaborate woodcut initials and head- and tail pieces. With a large woodcut bird's eye view to the title page, and numerous woodcut portraits throughout, each with elaborate borders.
