Contents: Describes Mardi Gras festivities, the
'grotesque carnival of the negroes who burlesque the regal grandeur of
the white people, and the night parades with glittering tinsel, flaming
torches borne by cloaked and cowled men and finally the mad scramble
for gaiety. A brief history of New Orleans follows, a background of
curioius episodes: the overflows of the Mississippi; the year of the
great plague; duels growing out of applause for singers at the French
Opera. Another episode shows us the negro snake worshipers who terrozed
New Orleans for years; another, a Voodoo orgy of recent date. Through
all these grotesque, incredible incidents we see the city slowly
emerge, first French, then Spanish, finally American. Mr. Suydam's
drawings capture perfectly the charm of this dual city, part modern,
part ancient, mysterious, fabulous. '
