You are bidding on a first American edition (pirated by Shepard) ADVENTURES IN THE LAND OF THE BEHEMOTH by Jules Verne, fully Illustrated by Ferat, and published in Boston by Henry L. Shepard & Co. in 1874. Published on the same day as the authorized American edition by Scribner, Armstrong. 'This tale of African adventure was initially published in France in 1872, as AVENTURES DE TROIS RUSSES ET DE TROIS ANGLAIS DANS L'AFRIQUE AUSTRALE, and then near the end of that year Sampson Low's English edition came out, titled MERIDIANA: 'The Adventures of Three Englishmen and Three Russians in South Africa' (note the inversion of the nationalities). Scribner, Armstrong's American edition, bearing the same title as the English edition, came out on May 23, 1874, the same day as Shepard's pirated edition. Shepard's has the much more attractive binding of the two (with open-mouthed hippo on both the front cover and spine), but has an altered translation and less-than-sharp illustrations. Scribner, Armstrong would counter with a cheaper version of the book, complete with a cautionary note to the public about buying 'pirated' editions of Verne's works.' This is a bright, unmarked copy, very good with very minor wear at the binding extremities (plus two closed tears on front endpaper).
