At auction is this 1943 copy of Betty Smith's novel 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It was published by Literary Classics and distributed by Harper Brothers, New York. Betty Smith was born in 1906, and has some sixty published one-act plays and six full-length dramas to her credit. This book is her first novel. I have not had the book appraised. The book itself is in excellent condition and the only problem is with the book cover which has some serious issues as can be seen on the photo. The book is 8 X 6 X 1 1/2 inches and contains 443 pages. It is hard bound, of course, and is unabridged. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is the story of Francie Nolan and the wworld of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that made her. It is a story of tears and laughter, cruelty and compassion, so crowded with life and people and incident that no description can begin to convey its spell.
