1903 G.P Putnam's Sons, London. This book appears to be Havelock Ellis' own copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. This book has been in my family for some 20 years. It came to us as a part of an estate of Jack Wilson, a cousin of my mother [born in London] who is now in her 80's. Jack's bookplate, signed 'J.A. Wilson' is on the front pastedown. Jack was a costume designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England for many years, during the 1930's to 1960's. Jack was gay, and very artistic, and quite a colorful character in Stratford in his day. This book is signed 'Havelock Ellis' with an address below, on the verso of the front fep. Havelock is described by Wikipedia, as, 'British sexologist, physician, and social reformer.' It is not surprising that a book of Whitman's poems, signed [ie. previously owned] by Ellis, would become a part of Jack's library. Due to the provenance, and some examples I have seen of Ellis' signature on-line, I will venture to say that this signature appears genuine. But I am not sure about this. I have also been able to confirm that Havelock Ellis indeed resided at Herne Hill, the town in the address under his name, see scan. Also, folded in the back of the book, is a handwritten poem to Jack on his 21st birthday, from 'Roy' and dated 6/22/24. The book itself is in good condition, see scans. It lacks the back fep, and has moderate foxing that is not unexpected. The binding is tight, and the covers, with gilt decoration, are in good condition.
