Up for bid is a 1st. edition of U.S Grants personal memoirs as first published in 1885 for Vol. 1 and 1886 for Vol. 2. U.S. Grant towards the end of his life was in financial distress. His friend Mark Twain, who managed a publishing business, urged him to write about his life. Not only was he in need of money but he was also suffering from throat cancer.
Grant first distingushed himself in the Mexican War. Afterwards, he returned to his hom of Galena, Illinois where he worked in his family business. When the war broke out he enlisted in the Union army. He stood out in his campaigns at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson and was noticed by President Lincoln for his success in the Battle of Vicksburg.
Lincoln soon appointed him commander of the Army of the Potomac where he achieved great victories against General Lee's army.
The condition of the two books is as follows. Both volumns have very good binding. Vol. 1 has H H Arthur stamped on inside the cover. All illustrations, maps and fold outs are present. The inside of each volumn the endpaper hinges are cracked, however, the binding is very solid. The two volumns are in very good condition and would add to any collector or interested person of the Civil War.
