Valour Fore and Aft - Being the Adventures of the Continental Sloop Providence 1775-1779 by Hope S. Rider. First edition. Published in 1977 by United States Naval Institute, Annapolis, Maryland. Pictorial jacket has attractive picture of Sloop Providence - 1777 firing a broadside at sea. First printed page has a map of the Atlantic Coast of the US. The next printed pages is a colored picture of the sloop firing on a three masted sailing ship. The Providence was a Sloop with a history rooted in pre-Revolutionary events, formerly Katy of the Navy of Rhode Island she was renamed Providence after entering the navy of the Continental Congress. She fired the first broadside of the war at sea. Amongst many who served in her John Paul Jones is probably best known. There are numerous B&W illustrations scattered throughout the book. 259 pages. Hardcover w/ jacket. Very minor jacket tear. Boards and pages in good-plus condition. Nice gift, keepsake or research aid.
