A great early day book or journal dated 1830-1840 from the State of Ohio. The book is 6 by 4 inches and has about 100 written pages. This includes ledger entries, some personal notes, a bit of school and Church writings. Inside the front board is the original label from Samuel Woods and Sons New York Book Sellers. Also hand written John Payne's day book. Starts dated Dec 1830 in New York City. An interesting early entry for bleeding and medicine $.37. A large list of classic books is listed as being purchased. Pages dated 1831 Franklin New Jersey with list of names that he charged for teaching and schooling. Mr Payne looks to have been a scholar. There is a later note added by Mary Payne 1862.1833 pages are from Marietta Ohio. Many names noted. Living in Zanesville Ohio in 1838. A few pages written on medical cures, A few look to be sermons. Athens Ohio 1839. Looks to have been a teacher. There is an entry that notes The Ohio Canal. Many names of students and friends and relatives. There are later entries in the blank areas that look to have been done by a child. Drawings, notes, writing practice. These later entries look to be in the same hand as the 1862 entries by Mary Payne. Some pages are loose with some stains. A very interesting look into the life of early America.
