Here's a compelling read for folks interested in Civil War Era history and Black Americana. It is an antique softcover copy of Hinton Rowan Helper's 'Compendium Of The Impending Crisis Of The South.' This particular edition was published by A.B. Burdick in 1860. Those in the know may be familiar with this incendiary work, but basically Helper's position was that slavery was not viable economically and that slaves should be sent back to Africa. In his Preface Helper writes: 'I have considered my subject ..with reference to its economic aspects as regards the whites..not to its humanitarian or religious aspects.' Banned in the South, Helper's book discusses such topics as: 'Why The North Has Surpassed The South;' 'How Slavery Can Be Abolished;' 'Southern Testimony Against Slavery;' the 'Popular Vote For President By The Free And By The Slave States 1856;' and many more. To illustrate his position Helper includes numerical charts and testimonials. While not in pristine condition this old book is serviceable for reading and reference. The 214 page text is complete and the cord binding fragile but still holding. The paper front cover is half gone and the back cover is missing. The good news is the title page seems to be a duplicate of the cover...so all the publication information is available. So this book is what it is, and sufficient for readers flexible on condition issues. Please ask any questions which come to mind.
