Ayn Rand is widely known for her best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system called Objectivism. Rand advocated rational individualism and laissez-faire capitalism, categorically rejecting socialism, altruism, and religion. Her ideas remain both influential and controversial, and she is considered by some to have 'invented' the 1980s in the same way that Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer paved the way for the sexual revolution of the 60s.
