Contemporary full panelled calf, rubbed and worn, amateur repair to head of spine, name to title erased in ink at an early date, insciption to chapter heading and to final blank, very light water stain to later leaves, but overall good crisp condition.

CONFUCIUS, the Latinized form of K'ung fu-tzu (551-479), meaning 'Master K'ung', revered by the Chinese as their greatest sage. His work became the cornerstone of Chinese social philosophy, and a basis of court culture and life. From the outset his work was highly influential, and continues to influence Eastern philosophy.
The work of Confucius was first introduced to Europe by Jesuit scholars, especially through the work of Matteo Ricci and Prospero Intorcetta.
