The author was a garden designer, read modern history at Oxford and contributed to Country Life, from whose archive he could select the fine photographic material for his publications. Several of the buildings are no longer extant.

First edition of the rare precursor to Tipping's famous series of the same name. The first page of the publisher's advertisements notes that this work 'supplements and completes . the three volumes of "In English Homes" and the three volumes of "Gardens Old and New".
