Shakespeare’s Flowers

By Jessica Kerr Illustrated by Anne Ophelia Dowden

The world of Shakespeare is bright with flowers:

“…daisies pied and violets blue And Lady-smocks all silver white,

And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue

Do paint the meadows with delight.”

Perdita welcomes guests with rosemary and rue for grace and remembrance; Ariel hides in a cowslip’s bell. There is magic in the “little western flower” Oberon uses to cast a spell on Titania, and tragedy in Ophelia’s garland and Lear’s crown of weeds.

In witches’ brews and love potions, as symbols of gallantry of faith, as seasoning in homely English kitchens, or as badges for the wars of kings, flowers and herbs were an intimate part of life in Shakespeare’s day. Their legends add color and fragrance to his plays and songs.

This handsome book combines fascinating lore and glorious pictures to re-create the gardens and meadows of Elizabethan England.

About the Author

Jessica Kerr was born in Dublin, educated at Roedean School in England, and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. For many years she has studied the legendary significance of the flowers in Shakespeare’s plays, and their role in the everyday life of Elizabethan England.

About the Illustrator

Anne Opheilia Dowden (1907–2007) is recognized as one of America’s former botanical artists. As a child in Colorado she began her lifelong hobby of drawing plants to which she now devotes full time. She has taught at Pratt Institute and was head of the art department of Manhattanville College. Mrs. Dowden works only from nature, and her paintings are noteworthy for their scientific accuracy. Of Shakespeare’s flowers she says: It required intensive research to learn what these plants looked like in Shakespeare’s day, what varieties grew in contemporary gardens, and what wildings were common in his native Warwickshire.”
