Pristine first edition thus of one of the famous Roycroft suede books hand-illumined in East Aurora, New York. This is a rare copy of Emerson's Self Reliance from a family collection. Soft board covers are wrapped in brown suede on the outside, and gold silk on the inside. The suede and silk are in great condition with minor spotting on the suede and very little wear. The title and author are overprinted in gilt onto a cartouche of burnished leather. There are 46 pages of Emerson's text on nice heavy paper, some of which bear the Roycroft watermark. The paper is in excellent shape with no markings of any kind. There is a small amount of imprint or bleed-through of the text, and a couple of small yellowish marks, but overall very pristine. The title page is beautifully decorated in the black and white Roycroft style, and there is a separate page with a decorated Roycroft emblem at the back of the book. The frontpiece is a print of a pencil drawing, presumably of Emerson, protected by tissue paper. The binding is strong, and there is a pale yellow silk ribbon placemark still attached.
Their is a final added page of text with:
''Here endeth the Essay on SELF-RELIANCE, written by RALPH WALDO EMERSON. Printed at the ROYCROFT SHOP, East Aurora, New York. Press-work finished this xxviith day of July, mcmii.''
This book also a Roycroft-printed bookmark advertising E
